Conventionally-raised hens are fed large amounts of GMO corn and soy because these are cheap, widely available materials. The problem is that corn and soy are heavily sprayed with pesticides like glyphosate and are high in omega 6 linoleic acid, which is a highly unstable polyunsaturated fat, whose overconsumption is linked to everything from heart disease to diabetes to hormonal disruption to obesity.

Humans need both omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids in the proper proportion. Ancestral diets have been shown to have around a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to 3. Thanks to industrially produced seed oils found in all ultraprocessed food, the typical American diet is closer to a 40:1 ratio.

Since conventional chicken is fed such high amounts of corn and soy, the linoleic acid in egg yolks can be as high as what is found in vegetable oil.

Our solution to this problem is to raise our chickens in a silvopasture system, which combines traditional pasture with trees, giving our birds ample area to forage most of their food. Their diet is much closer to the natural diet of wild jungle fowl from which modern chickens have descended. The feed we do provide is a home made mix of organic, non-GMO grains. We don’t use any soy in the feed and we ferment their daily ration to help with digestibility and to further reduce the linoleic acid content through the magic of microbes.

The result is eggs that are nutritionally closest to those our human ancestors would have eaten and some of the best yolks you’ve ever tasted.
